Hop on the ferry at Playa Tortugas and enjoy the Caribbean Sea ride over to Cancun’s neighboring island. Ferries run all day and it’s easy to go in the morning and return in the evening. Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation on Isla Mujeres and there are plenty of sites to see including: Playa Norte, Maya Ruins, and beautiful sunsets.
Tulum is a city located about 1.5 hours south of Cancun. Tulum is famous for its beautiful Mayan archaeological site overlooking the ocean and its cozy cabanas on the beach. It is also know as the hippy town of the Mexican Caribbean. Tulum can be reached by the ADO bus in downtown Cancun for an affordable fee. Its amazing sites are definitely worth the day trip.
3. Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is a fun and stylish up-and-coming town located just 45 minutes south of Cancun. Know affectionately as just “Playa” to most, it is famous for its 5th avenue, where tourists and locals walk up and down to dine, shop, and watch street performers. Playa is home to many music and beach festivals throughout the year and can be easily reached from Cancun by bus or taxi.
Akumal is a small beach town located just south of Playa del Carmen and before Tulum. It has a heavenly beach with perfect snorkeling waters. People travel to Akumal for the scuba diving, snorkeling, and turtles. Akumal locals educate visitors about endangered green sea turtles and their habitats. Be sure to jump in a fresh water cenote while you are there too. You can reach Akumal by bus or taxi from downtown Cancun.
