Cancun − or the Mexican Caribbean as it is also called − may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a golf vacation, but you may be surprised to discover that Cancun has some of the most challenging, breathtakingly beautiful golf courses in the world. In fact, the 2009 Celebrity Golf Invitational tournament was held at one of the top 10 golf courses in Mexico at Playa Mujeres Golf Club.
Golf Course Designers
Professional golfers have played in Cancun for years, ultimately selecting it as the ideal location to design their own championship golf courses. Many signature golf courses in the region bear their names, such as Greg Norman, Nick Price, Robert Von Hagge, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Jack Nicklaus, P.B. Dye, Isao Aoki, Tom Weiskopf, and Tom Fazio.
The lush tropical vegetation, unique natural landscaping, and warm sunny climate make the Mexican Caribbean an ideal region for golf course development. Its natural terrain yield the finest golf greens and fairways, natural hills, sinkholes (cenotes), sand traps, views of the Caribbean Sea and Nichupte Lagoon, and scattered Mayan ruins on some golf courses, such as the Cancun Golf Club at Pok-ta-Pok.
A golfer’s paradise, Cancun has received international acclaim for its existing competitive golf courses − with more to come!
Cancun Golf Club at Pok-ta-Pok – Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1976, this competitive golf course is an 18-hole golf course, par 72, and 6,636 yards long, strategically developed around Mayan ruins, and with dazzling views of Nichupte Lagoon. Located in the Cancun hotel zone on the lagoon side of Kukulcan Boulevard, the property is only 3.5 kilometers from Sunset Royal Resort and only 2 kilometers from Sunset Lagoon Resort.
Playa Mujeres Golf Club – Designed by golf professional Greg Norman in 2006, this championship golf course is an 18-hole golf course, par 72, and 7,260 yards long. One of the region’s best courses, it has been acknowledged by the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWG). With stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and Isla Mujeres, it features white sand traps, water holes, and bunkers in adjoining jungles, and has been recognized as an eco-friendly development. Playa Mujeres Golf Club is located north of Cancun on Bonampak Avenue near Punta Sam.
Cancun Country Club − This expansive property will have two championship, 18-hole golf courses that meet TPC (Tournament Players Course) standards and PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour specifications − one designed by golf course architect Tom Fazio and the other designed by golf professional Nick Price. Located five minutes from Cancun International Airport, this property will feature the largest driving range in Latin America (10 hectares) and include a golf academy.
The Caiman at Puerto Cancun − This championship, 18-hole golf course being designed by golf professional Tom Weiskopf will stretch across 185 acres of seaside land in Cancun’s hotel zone bordering the marina. Golfers will pass through an ecological reserve on a course with winding fairways, water obstacles, strategic green placement, tricky bunkers and sand traps. Located in Puerto Cancun, this property will have a driving range, practice green, and clubhouse with a restaurant and pro golf shop.
Cancun is becoming the golf professionals’ and amateurs’ golf destination of choice. Breathtakingly beautiful courses with exquisite tropical scenery also meet exceptional design standards. On your next golf vacation, tee up in Cancun!
